Did you know that English is the most spoken language in the world (even before Chinese) in terms of the number of people who master a certain degree of the language? Estimates assume that somewhere between 1 and 1.5 billion people world-wide are in command of the English language either passively or actively. However, when considering the number of people speaking a language as their first or second language, meaning who have more than just rudimentary knowledge, then Chinese and its 1.2 billion speakers clearly takes the lead. The third spot is taken up by Hindi, with 418 million speakers.
